Mahadeb Shi, a postgraduate in cinema from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, with specialization in editing, 1985. Over three decades since then, he has been working as director and editor in both film and video media. Edited many national and international award-winning films including ‘Voices from Baliapal’ his very first edited documentary that won National award and 1st Golden conch in Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) and also UNICEF AWARD for best human documentary. He received best editor award (National) presented by University Grant Commission for his work in ‘Tales from the Margin’, which received many awards in India as well as aboard including human rights award in Geneva. His other notable work ‘Eleven Miles’, a feature length documentary on the Bauls of Bengal that he co-produced, edited and also designed sound track won Joris Iven Award at the ‘Cinema Du Reel,’ Paris, 1990 and was broadcast on Ch-4 London and DD3/Doordarshan, India. His first directorial venture ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ that narrates the story of the oldest and largest monastery of India was shown in the competitive section of the FILM SOUTHASIA,1998 and the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in 1998. His other directorial ventures include ‘Kirtan of Bengal’ – a 16 mm documentary capturing the lives of traditional musician in Bengal, ‘KatherBaxo’ – a 16 mm personal docu- fiction on Calcutta tramways that works as a metaphor of the city, ‘A Journey Extraordinary’-that examines the plurality and diversity of India, ‘Yamuna Katha’– the film explores the relationship between Jamuna river and the city of Delhi, ‘Call of the Climate’ – accepting climate change is a reality the film examines in depth the connections between climate change and energy security. His latest Documentary ‘Tramjatra’ – a unique journey that celebrates the Melbourne Kolkata tramway friendship that is continuing for last 20 years. The film was screened as one of the concluding ceremony films in Melbourne Indian film festival in 2017. He has been given credit as Post Production Director for the film ‘The Girls We Were and The Women We Are’ that own National Award as a best educational film in May 2018. At the moment he is completing a short film that he made for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston and his most ambitious project ‘When Einstein met Tagore: Tracing the Map of Hope’, which is under production.
